Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony Performance Sparks Controversy

Church Leaders and Politicians Criticize Skit

The Last Supper Tableau Receives Backlash

Paris, France - Friday, July 26th, 2024 - A performance during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday has drawn criticism from church leaders and conservative politicians. The skit, which evoked Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting "The Last Supper," has been condemned for its alleged blasphemous and offensive nature.

The Last Supper, a depiction of Jesus Christ's final meal with his disciples, is a sacred moment in Christian tradition. However, organizers of the opening ceremony altered the scene considerably, with actors portraying the disciples wearing modern clothing and engaging in flamboyant dance routines.

In a statement, the organizers of the Paris Olympics apologized to anyone who was offended by the performance, acknowledging that it may have been perceived as insensitive and disrespectful. They further stated that the intention was to create a "festive and inclusive" opening ceremony, but that they "regret that certain artistic choices may have caused disappointment or anger."
