Historical Context

In 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine held a referendum on its independence. This referendum was a significant event in Ukraine's history, as it marked the country's transition to independence.

The referendum was held on December 1, 1991, and saw a voter turnout of over 84%. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of independence, with over 92% of voters approving the Act of Declaration of Independence.

International Recognition

Ukraine's independence was quickly recognized by the international community. By the end of 1991, over 120 countries had recognized Ukraine as an independent state.

Crimea's Status

In 1991, Crimea was granted the status of an autonomous republic within Ukraine. Crimeans supported the vote for Ukrainian independence, albeit by a small margin.
