Historical Context

The referendum was held on December 1, 1991, and saw a voter turnout of over 84%. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of independence, with over 92% of voters approving the Act of Declaration of Independence.

International Recognition

Crimea's Status

In 1991, Crimea was granted the status of an autonomous republic within Ukraine. Crimeans supported the vote for Ukrainian independence, albeit by a small margin.
